Core Message:

In Romans 11:1-2, 29-32, Paul makes a case for the future salvation of Israel. He uses an interesting interplay to support his case. First, he warns the Gentiles against developing an attitude of contempt toward the Jews. Second, he says that the Gentiles will experience God’s mercy when the Jewish people are saved.

God won’t change His mind about what he has called you to do. If God has called you, that calling is still there, whether or not you have obeyed. And if God gave you a gift, that gift is still there! Whatever God has called you to do, He has also gifted you to do it.

Opening Prayer:

Eternal God,
you are present with us throughout our lives,
even when others plot to do us harm.
May we learn to live together in unity,
that in all we do,
we may sing your praises now and forever. Amen.

Scripture:

1-2a I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew.

29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[a] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you.

32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Scripture: Matthew 15:10-28 – A Lesson in Faith and Humility

In the passage from Matthew 15:10-28, we witness a poignant exchange between Jesus and a Canaanite woman. This interaction reveals profound lessons about the nature of faith, humility, and the all-encompassing love of our Lord. In this portion of the Gospel, Jesus uses a seemingly straightforward situation to illuminate deeper spiritual truths. As we delve into these verses, let’s open our hearts and minds to receive the wisdom that Jesus imparts to us through this encounter.

Matthew 15:10-28 (NIV)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”

16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes, it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Lessons on Spiritual Purity and Defilement

In this portion of the scripture (Matthew 15:10-20), Jesus teaches a profound lesson about true spiritual defilement. He emphasizes that it’s not what we consume physically that defiles us, but rather what comes out of our hearts through our words and actions. This teaching challenges us to examine the state of our hearts, recognizing that our thoughts and attitudes are indicators of our spiritual condition. It calls us to cultivate purity in our hearts by aligning our thoughts, words, and deeds with God’s standards.

Explanation and Reflection: It’s easy to focus solely on external behaviors, but Jesus directs our attention to the heart—the wellspring of our actions. This challenges us to embrace an inward transformation that reflects Christ’s love and righteousness. As we purify our hearts through prayer, Scripture, and a conscious effort to align ourselves with God’s Word, we become vessels of His light in a world that desperately needs it.

Commentary on Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth: As disciples of Christ, our spiritual growth hinges on nurturing a heart that’s surrendered to God. This passage underscores the importance of integrity and authenticity in our faith journey. Our thoughts should be guarded, our words seasoned with grace, and our actions rooted in love. The process of spiritual growth involves recognizing areas of defilement, seeking God’s forgiveness, and allowing His transformative power to renew us daily.

The Canaanite Woman’s Faith

In the verses of Matthew 15:21-28, we encounter a Canaanite woman who exemplifies the power of persistent faith. Despite initial silence from Jesus and even facing a seemingly discouraging response, she persists in seeking His help for her demon-possessed daughter. Her unwavering faith and humility stand as a testimony to the potency of persistent prayer and the recognition of our dependence on God’s mercy.

Explanation and Reflection: The Canaanite woman’s actions mirror our own need for persistent faith and humility in approaching God. She shows us that even in the face of apparent obstacles or unanswered prayers, we should persevere and trust in God’s goodness. Her humility and acknowledgment of her position as a “dog” open the way for Jesus to marvel at her faith. This reminds us that God responds to genuine humility and persistent faith with blessings beyond our expectations.

Commentary on Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth: Christian discipleship involves aligning our will with God’s, even when challenges arise. The Canaanite woman’s story encourages us to keep seeking God’s presence, regardless of external circumstances. Our faith is refined through trials, and our humility before God positions us to receive His grace. Just as the woman’s faith resulted in her daughter’s healing, our steadfast faith can lead to spiritual breakthroughs and transformative encounters with Christ.

Expanding Hearts and Inclusive Love

Matthew 15:24-28 showcases Jesus’ inclusive love and His mission to extend salvation to all people. Through His interaction with the Canaanite woman, Jesus challenges societal norms and cultural boundaries, demonstrating that His love knows no limits. He rewards her great faith and redefines the parameters of His ministry, inviting us to embrace a perspective that transcends divisions and embraces unity in Christ.

Explanation and Reflection: Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman serves as a reminder that God’s love transcends human barriers. He calls us to see one another as fellow image-bearers, irrespective of cultural or social differences. This story challenges us to confront biases and prejudices, reflecting Christ’s all-encompassing love in our interactions with others.

Commentary on Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth: Christian discipleship involves imitating Christ’s love and breaking down barriers that divide us. The Canaanite woman’s story prompts us to evaluate our attitudes and actions, ensuring that they align with the example set by Jesus. As we seek to embrace inclusivity, our spiritual growth flourishes, leading us to become agents of unity and reconciliation in a world hungering for the transformative power of Christ’s love.
